In an oblique reference to statements of some politicians, Chairman National Accountability Bureau Justice Javed Iqbal (retd) on Wednesday said that a propaganda campaign has been launched that bureaucracy has stopped working due to NAB's fear, adding this drive aims to defame the anti-graft body and discourage government officials. The chairman NAB while addressing the federal secretaries said that out of thousands of corruption cases he reviewed during the last 13 months, there were a few cases against bureaucracy. The propaganda was just aimed at criticising and discourages government officials, he further said.

He asked bureaucracy that the performance of the bureau will improve further with their cooperation. "Eradication of corruption is not the sole responsibility of NAB but we all are collectively responsible for curbing this menace," he further said, adding, "We need to work jointly for the development of our country." Iqbal said those who even had no conveyance facility 28 years ago own properties and towers in Dubai and other countries at present. "Is asking about the money trail of these prosperities in foreign countries a crime?" he asked. "Is it crime to ask where and how $95 billion loan has been spent?" he further asked.

Iqbal said, "NAB and bureaucracy have no relation with any political party, government, group or any segment of society but our relationship is only with Pakistan. Bureaucracy should always make decisions in the interest of the country." He said the government frames policies and bureaucracy executes policies. Bureaucracy should not bow down to political pressure, he said.

He said the government officials should work in accordance with the law, rules and regulations. "If bureaucrats work as per law then why NAB will summon them," he said, adding that he has decided that from today he will personally review complaints filed in NAB against secretaries or additional secretaries and if it is deemed necessary, questionnaires will be sent to them.

The chairman said that Bureau will question award of contract if it is awarded on a single bidding basis. He said that NAB is taking measures to control corruption in development projects of Balochistan, adding that investigation is under way against three provincial ministers.
